Discovering Poás, Arenal, Tenorio and Rincón volcanoes

D1 - San José / Poás Volcano / Arenal
Meeting in San José at 9 am. Departure by bus to Poás Volcano and its huge crater with a blue sky lake. Bus to La Fortuna. Settling for 2 nights in a family lodge just by the famous volcano. If the weather is fine, enjoy a night watching the lava flow rushing down the slopes of the volcano, constantly active since it has been rudely woken up in 1968.
D2 - Arenal Volcano
Early walk and swim in La Fortuna’s Catarata, huge waterfall in a natural lush amphitheatre. Hiking in Volcan Arenal National Park and towards the mirador from where you can watch the activity of the volcano (5 hours walk). In the evening you can (in option) enjoy a night swim in a hot water spring. Back to the lodge.
D3 - Arenal / Tenorio Volcano
Departure in minibus to the North. Visit of the indigenous reserve of Maleku : discovery of the local handicraft and lunch in the village cooperative. Follow towards the Tenorio volcano. Settling in a rustic lodge built right up the inactive volcano, covered by beautiful forests. Meals and accommodation.
D4 - Tenorio Volcano / Rincón de la Vieja
Early walk in Heliconias Reserve (suspension bridges over the canopy) Hiking in the Volcan Tenorio National Park to admire the famous Río Celeste, whose intense blue contrasts with the green of the forest. Trip by bus towards the Volcan Miravalles and Rinconcito Lodge located in a beautiful rural setting. Meals and accommodation at the lodge.
D5 - Rincón de la Vieja National Park
Start of the hike, nice crossing from East to West of Rincón National Park. This part of the park is not very busy and is very favorable to watch the forest fauna (monkeys, coatis, agoutis as well as numerous birds…) Discover the « Bosque Encantado » and a hot spring in the bed of a river (6 hour walk). Dinner and accommodation at Rincón Lodge wonderfully built right up the National Park.
D6 - Rincón de la Vieja Volcano
A nice day of hiking in Rincón National Park with, according to the weather forecast, the climbing of the active crater (not always achievable on windy days) or a hike towards the numerous waterfalls in the heart of a spectacular strangler fig tree forest. Visit of volcanic phenomena of Las Pailas. Back to the lodge.
D7 - Rincón / San José
After a last morning walk, departure by minibus to San José. On the way visit of Las Pumas, feline care centre, where you can watch the 6 species visible in Costa Rica. Arrival in Costa Rica around 6 pm.
